Sport/Not Sport- Golf

Sure, they follow the PGA Tour on Sporstcenter, but they also included a squirrel water skiing behind a miniature, remote-controlled boat in their Top 10. So is golf a sport? Robin Williams sums up golf's "athletic" activity perfectly- "Whack the ball, get in the cart...whack the ball, get in the cart."

Don't give me the normal objections-
"It takes immense skill and lots of practice!" Yeah? So does chess.
"It requires mental and physical concentration and control!" Ever play Twister?
"Tiger Woods is a great athlete!" And John Daly, at 5-11 & 230lbs, took one too many trips to Candyland.
"It's a sport because you need to make better decisions than your opponents." Try Monopoly.
"But...but golf's hard! So hard that we need mulligans and gimmes!" Sorry!
"OK, um...so maybe golf ISN'T a sport?" BINGO!

To say "Don't give me the normal objections" is a ridiculous comment because they are important to any arguement that makes golf a sport. Those statemnets alone don't mean squat but think about this: Golf is a difficult game in which you use your body. Tiger Woods, being a phenomonal athelete has beaten the living hell out of all those "John Daily types," thus the fact that his athletic prowess and skill has allowed him to win would indicate that golf is indeed a sport. In the PT era (post tiger) golfers have been forced to become athletes in order to win. The arguement can still be made that BT (before tger) golf was not a sport. But consider this: if you hurt your back you can't play golf but you can play monopoly (that was true well before Tiger Woods). As much as poeple may hate the idea, golf is a sport.

golf is not a sport, it's a game. it was meant to be a nice fun, relaxing game played by guys to get away from their wives, or girlfriends. if golf should be considered a sport, than so should "professional" boggle tournaments. as for sportscenter, keep in mind they also have the spelling bee on espn regularly, so of course golf will be included.

This is horse shit. No one of those things, Monopoly etc., requires all that stuff. How do you define a "sport." Those are all part of your definition, I'm sure. Plus, when was that last time you ever saw a (non-handicapped) pro golfer "get in the cart." So it doesn't require running. That's not necessarily central to a sport. Otherwise, straight up running would be a sport, which is certainly more recreational than golf. Instead of comparing some of the aspects of golf to board games, which can be done with any sport, try defeining a sport for yourself.
